Who We Cater For

Please take the time to read through this page for all the swim school information some may be relevant to you other parts may not however this forms the terms and conditions of the swim school, as signed by you when you enrol.

Our swim program has been especially researched and developed to cater for infants from 3months of age through to approx 6 years of age. We also cater for all ages above this upon request and can provide private lessons where needed. Its never too early or late to learn how to swim. We do run sessions for mothers groups, special needs groups and multicultural groups.

Starting a child at any age is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Swimming lessons are unique as unlike any other sport as is a skill that carries over to your adult years and is the only sport that can quite literally SAVE your life.

Fish Links is a private swim school that is Nationally registered with Swim Australia and we are proud to have been one of the founding members of Swim Australia. To visit their web site and for some great articles and information please follow this link - Swim Australia

Swimwear and Equipment

All children not yet toilet trained need to wear a Swim Nappy to avoid any 'accidents' in the water. These can be purchased at the pool for $5.00 (normally $20).

We ask that children do not wear rash vests in the water as it restricts their 'feel' for the water. In Winter it does not help keep your child warm it can do the opposite as the water cools on their body leaving them susceptible to the cooler air. Appropriate swimwear should be worn at all times unless a medical or religious beliefs prevents your child from doing so.

Caps and Goggles are needed for all children over the age of two. The caps aid to keeping our water quality at its best. Goggles - though not used every lesson - open a whole new world for your child to discover allowing them to see clearly in the water.  Once in a class without parents you receive a latex cap at no charge, we

Venue

We work out of Vaucluse hospital pool in Brunswick East. It was unfortunate that after six years we lost the lease on our old venue mid 2008. We do hope to move to a bigger more permanent venue as soon as possible. Meanwhile Vaucluse is ideal.

The pool itself is Salt Chlorinated and maintained at a comfy 33 – 34oC with the air temperature kept ‘comfortable’ for both those in and out of the water.

Assessments

Assessments are usually conducted over the telephone and an appropriate class found for the swimmer based on a brief questionnaire. You will be sent out any relevant information and an enrolment form to bring with you to your first lesson.  The teacher will assess swimmers during the first class and if that level is unsuitable changes will be made at the end of the first lesson. For further assessment times please visit our inquiry page.

We do our best to cater for families with more than one child in attempting to keep lessons as close together as possible, minimising the amount of time you have to spend at the pool.  We offer families a discount where the fourth child enrolled in the same family is free of charge.

Progression

The swim program is broken into 4 areas based on age. Within those areas swimmers are assessed on ability and can progress at any time through the levels. In some cases children may progress to the higher age group if their skills and maturity level are satisfactory. Please visit our web pages for each program detailing the progression levels.

Baby Swimming - 3mths - 2yrs

Toddler Swimming - 2yrs - 3yrs

Kinder Classes - 3yrs - 5yrs

Primary Classes - Age 5+ Levels 1 through to Level 5

Swimming Club Inc - Once all levels at Fish Links are completed children can progress to Links Swimming Club

Private lessons and Adult lessons can be arranged upon request

All our programs focus on each individual child within the group developing their skills to their full potential. Swimmers will learn a combination of water safety and swimming skills in ALL levels.

Remember no child is ever ‘'water proof or safe’. You must always supervise children when in or around the water regardless of how many lessons they have had or how well they can swim.

Class Structure and Expectations

We have designed the Fish Links program and continually research to keep the program up to date with industry standards.  Programs are regularly revised to ensure the latest teaching techniques and industry standards are being met. Classes run for 1/2 hr sessions once a week the exception of 'Parent Contact Week' in which lessons run for 20 minutes.  By contacting our office we can provide you with a list of times and availability if you have not already booked in.

Throughout the series of lessons, parents and children will participate in activities to enhance learning and water safety and water safety skills, as well as developing the four main competitive strokes when ready.

In baby and toddler classes, we teach you, the parent, how to teach your child, allowing you to follow up and practice at home or your local pool.  It is a good idea to try and visit a pool outside class times to practice with your child.  Children once a term will swim fully clothed giving them the experience of feeling slightly weighed down in the water.  We ask you bring a long sleeved top, long pants, shoes and socks for each child to wear in the water, also a garbage bag to take the wet stuff home in!

A large emphasis is placed on water safety skills and preparing the child for the unexpected, this is done with a fun and caring approach that is not distressing to the child.  All children are different in their personalities and for this reason, our classes allow for personal development.

Children learn through interactive play so we try to make our classes fun and enjoyable for both parents and children. It is important to remember that regardless of the number of lessons your child has they can never be ‘completely’ safe in the water or ‘drown proof’. The best prevention is to never take your eyes off children when they are in or around water.

All swimmers enrolled are encouraged to actively join in during theme weeks where we encourage everyone to get involved in dressing up and joining in activities.

We run competitions from time to time as well as small fund raisers for additional swim school equipment.

Facilities – what to bring?

The Venue is nice and bright, the pool salt chlorinated and maintained at 36oC. It has both male and female changerooms as well as an individual toilet directly off the pool deck (for those quick trips to the loo) and an individual shower/change room. Please try to keep this change room free for teachers especially at the end of lessons.

You will need to bring your OWN BABY CHANGE MAT please we do not have much storage space at the pool and as many of you would know we simply do not use change tables as children can easily roll off especially when wet. If starting classes for the first time please check our web site for more information.

All Classes

  • Bring your completed signed enrolment forms to reception
  • Please bring your full payment for classes along the first day
  • We accept either cheque or cash or direct deposit into our account - we do not have credit card or eftpos facilities

Please make cheque payable to Fish Links Swim School

Receipts will be written for all payments made

If either you or your child has a cold or gastro, please do not enter the water until it has cleared completely, this will reduce the chances of passing germs onto others in the class

Arrive 5 - 10 minutes early; this will allow you enough time to change and shower before entering the pool, you may need to arrive earlier if you need to pay fees. Please bring two towels in case you need a towel during the lesson for out of water activities.

All swimmers and parents should have a water bottle or drink to replace fluids especially during Summer.

The swimming industry recommends parents not allow children to play with caps in the bath at home as they may cover their face with them causing breathing difficulties or suffocation

You will receive a complimentary latex cap when you enrol, Silicone caps are available for purchase at the pool - swimming caps are not a toy and adult supervision is advised if young children are playing with these at home. Please do not 'powder' your caps when at home as it will shorten the life of the cap.

Goggles are great to have on hand, some choose to use them regularly others just occasionally.  We do run activities with and without goggles in lessons

We recommend you wear a hat after your lesson when heading to the car so you can stay warm

Be sure to leave the pool dressed – even in summer to avoid colds and flu and ALWAYS wear shoes to avoid cut feet

Bring something for your child to eat and/or drink after class as they will need to replenish their energy. We do have some foods available for sale. Remember eating is only permitted on pool deck not in changerooms

Please be aware that no refunds or transfers are for missed lessons

We have had this policy since early 1997 where we do not have make up classes or refunds. We found in the past that we get behind in paying pool hire and teachers when we offer these. When lessons are missed teachers still have to be paid as does the pool hire which is what your fees pay for. Should a child be ill for a long period missing lessons please let us know as we we assess each case as individually.

If the pool is closed or a lesson cancelled for any reason we will provide several options for you to make up the classes. It is better children make up the class to cover the skills they missed out on.

We do not have an area for free play before or after classes

Please ensure children do not enter the water until they have been signalled to do so by their teacher, participants must exit the water as soon as the class ends. This is to ensure everyone’s safety.

Baby and Toddler classes

When enrolling in a class, consider your child’s sleep time.  - It is recommended to swim either prior to sleeping or just after. Try not to feed babies immediately before a class, allow at least a ½ hr for food to settle. We recommend Eenee nappies to all children not yet toilet trained. Eenee nappies can be purchased from us at your first lesson. These prevent any accidents from going into the pool and disruption to lessons.

  • Disposable nappies disintegrate in the water and can clog the filtration system of the pool
  • Cloth nappies hold too much water and can make baby uncomfortable and weighed down
  • This is also the case with the new ‘Little Swimmers’ selling in supermarkets though these are ok temporarily they do hold a lot of water
  • Parents will need to wear swimwear a dark colored T-shirt in the water for all classes, the reason for this will be explained in the first few classes
  • Please bring two towels, one for you and one for your child
  • After class wrap your child and in a towel, cuddling them until they are settled and warm this will make dressing just a little easier
  • Your child will be rather tired and hungry after the class so bringing food along is often a good idea
  • Please note that breast-feeding IN the water is not recommended for health and safety reasons
  • If you have any questions or uncertainties, please talk to your class teacher or call the office on 93061548 at anytime or fill in our feedback page
  • Enjoy your classes this is a very special time for you and your child
